This piece, on which two Chinese characters “fendou” (struggle) are written horizontally (from right to left), together with the signature--“written by Sun Yat-sen in the first year of the Republic of China”--and his square seal with Chinese characters meaning “the seal of Sun Wen” cut in intaglio, is a calligraphy work of art that Dr. Sun Yat-sen wrote in 1912 when he served as the provisional president of the Republic of China. As a motto of the president, this piece was once hung on the wall of the presidential office. It is a true reflection of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s revolutionary career and his great spirit. A look at this calligraphy work reminds us of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s great life and his spirit of fighting for the revolution.
