Excavated from a Wang family tomb of the Eastern Jin dynasty at Xiangshan in Gulou District of Nanjing. Collected by the Oriental Metropolitan Museum/
This piece is made of pottery clay. The ox has a lanky yet well-balanced and powerful torso. With its horns curving forward and its ears backward, it seems that the ox is pulling the cart forward slowly. The flat top of the cart protrudes slightly over the cart’s rectangular carriage both in front and at back. Open in the front, the carriage has a pingjiinside itfor people to lean on. Around the cart scatter figurines of attendants in various postures: leading the ox, kneeling, or standing with hands crossed before their chests. The unearthing of the pottery ox cart and tomb figurines reproduces the ostentatious traveling scene of wealthy aristocrats at that time.
