Nanjing Municipal Museum(Chaotian Palace)

The Nanjing Municipal Museum, a branch of the Nanjing Museum Administration, is a comprehensive historical and art museum. It is also a patriotism education base for Nanjing and Jiangsu province as a whole. The Chaotian Palace, where the museum is located, is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction north of the ancient Yundu canal (the canal was dug inside the Shuixi Gate of Nanjing during the Six Dynasties). Bordering mountains at back and facing rivers in front, the magnificent palace is home to the largest and best preserved Ming-Qing official buildings in the Jiangnan region (the region in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River). Known as “The No.1 Historical Site in Jinling (present-day Nanjing)”, the palace is also a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

The Nanjing Municipal Museum holds more than 100,000 cultural objects, dating back as far as to the remote antiquity and as near as to the Republic of China. These collections have high historical, artistic, and scientific values. Amongst the collections are “Nanjing Ape-man Skull Fossil”, “Celadon Underglaze Supernatural Birds and Auspicious Beasts Pot with a Dish-shaped Mouth”, “Epitaphs of the Wang Family and Xie Family”, “Blue-and-white Prunus Vase with the Design of Xiao He Chasing after Han Xin under Moonlight”, “Gold-inlaid Jade Belt with Designs of Clouds and Dragons”, “Amber Cup in the Shape of a Lotus Leaf Pulled by a Fisherman”, and “King Ashoka’s Pagoda Inlaid with Seven Buddhist Treasures”. They are all renowned cultural objects both at home and abroad, embodying the essence of cultural relics from different historical periods.

Permanent exhibitions: “A Strategically Situated Place: The History of Nanjing”, “Yutang Jiaqi: Exhibition of Selected Collections”, and “Colorful Costumes and Beautiful Hairpins: Song-Ming Costumes and Accessories Exhibition”. Among them, “A Strategically Situated Place: The History of Nanjing” won China’s 11th Top 10 Boutique Exhibitions Award for Best Production.

The museum and the ancient palace form a perfect match. The profound historical and cultural deposits of Nanjing as the capital of 10 dynasties and the unique geographical advantages of Nanjing as one of China’s four ancient capitals have made the museum the best place for people to learn about Nanjing’s urban history, understand Nanjing’s cultural soul, and appreciate Nanjing’s ancient treasures .
