On the front side of this gray pottery eave tile, there is a bas-relief of a vivid human face complete with eyebrows, eyes, nose, cheeks, mouth, and beards. Eave tiles, as a construction component of ancient Chinese architectures, were generally used for building palaces, yamen, temples, and other high-standard buildings to protect eaves. They also have a strong decorative effect. Eave tiles of different ages have different decorative designs and styles. Eave tiles with human-face design are very unique as very few of them have been unearthed in other places of China.
