This square seal is made of stone and has a tortoise-shaped knob on the top. It is the first official seal that includes the Chinese character “zhang” (seal) in the seal text. Another important feature of the seal is its simplified typeface, something between clerical script and regular script. The typeface looks simple, vigorous, and stylish. From pre-Qin period to Han dynasty, seal script was the only typeface for seal engraving. This restriction, however, was broken during the period of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern dynasties, as seals engraved in clerical script began to appear. This stone seal of Lingling Prefecture Chief is an example in this aspect. It made a bold attempt in breaking the seal script restriction, which encouraged the enrichment of seal typefaces and better artistic effect for seals in times to come.
