Excavated from the underground vault of the Changgan Temple, which was built in the 4th year of the Northern Song Dazhong Xiangfu period, at Baotading
These silver boxes are partially gilt with gold. The big silver box is square in form with a lu-style cover. The cover is decorated with curly grass patterns. On the top of the cover, the pattern of two dragons playing with a ball is chiseled, while on the sloping sides of the cover, the pattern of double phoenixes is chiseled. The body of the box has straight walls and a slightly concaved bottom. The four sides of the box are decorated with curly grass patterns. At the center of each of the four sides is a Buddha statue sitting on a lotus pedestal. When unearthed, the small silver box, also square in form, was found placed in the large one. The small silver box has a flat-top cover with a background pattern of pearls. At the center of the top surface of the cover, there is a diamond-shapedkaiguang, inside which is the interlocking peony pattern. Each of the four corners of the top surface of the cover is decorated with a peony spray, while the four sides of the cover are decorated with the vajra pestle pattern. The body of the small box has straight walls, a flat bottom, and is decorated with the vajra pestle pattern on four sides. When unearthed, the small silver box had induction sarira in it. The sarira are valuable physical materials for studying Buddhism in the Song dynasty, and therefore have great religious, historical, and cultural values.
